How can becoming healthier be E-A-S-Y?

Now that you know how to set achievable and sustainable goals (see my earlier contribution on “A healthier you in 2015… it’s EASY!”) then you can move on to the EASY route to a healthier you. Being healthy means something different for each person but the EASY route is a good way of finding BALANCE in your journey towards a healthier lifestyle.


E: Eating- decide what eating healthier means to you. Make small steps towards this on a regular basis. A good and simple tool to go back to is Canada’s Food Guide.

A: Activity- This is a must. In our busy lifestyles ( read about the importance of activity in My Mama Journey’s post “The life of a lady who likes to ” go go go” ) we often neglect physical activity. This doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym. This can be walking to work, playing with your child, or doing housecleaning. A simple way to start to measure your activity is with a pedometer. To meet activity guidelines an adult should be getting 10,000 steps a day. You’ll like be surprised on how many you actually get…

S: Sleep/Screens- More sleep & less screen time. The average adult needs 8 hours of sleep. But I can get by with 6 you say. Yes, you can get by but research shows that adults who do not get enough sleep are: more overweight, increased chance of diabetes/cancer/other health issues, and are more depressed and anxious. One of the biggest culprits in sleep problems are the screens. No screens in bed and within 1 hour of going to bed. Get rid of those TVs, ipads, iphones, and other gadgets in bed and focus on you, your partner and getting some rest.

Y: You- Juggling work, family and personal tasks that all need to get done can take a big toll on us all. What usually is neglected is YOU time. This is a must in a journey to both a physically and psychologically healthier you. Many people neglect this important area which is essential in finding a healthy balanced life. Take a bubble bath with candles. Read a good book. Go for a nice walk alone. Some time to be with yourself doing something that you enjoy should be a part of your week that you look forward to.

So the E-A-S-Y route may not look so easy after all… but really it can be. Remember, one step at a time in making lifestyle changes and go small and achievable. The EASY part is that if you do focus on each of these components in your life you’ll be incorporating health and balance into 2015!
